Short Summary
A complete rebuild on the stone foundation of a storm-damaged home. The Millhouse uses heavy timber framing, natural finishes, and simple geometry to create a modern rural dwelling grounded in craft and resilience.
Project Description
Set deep within the woods of Putnam County, the Millhouse Residence stands on the stone foundation of a home destroyed when a massive tree fell during a storm. From that loss, Mandra Workshop was tasked with reimagining the site—designing a new heavy timber home that honors both resilience and simplicity.
The new design celebrates honest materials and handcrafted structure. Exposed timber framing, lime-washed plaster walls, and wide plank floors define a warm, minimal interior that feels both timeless and contemporary. Large windows frame the forest beyond, while a new deck and outdoor hearth extend the living space into the landscape.
Rooted in its site and rebuilt with care, the Millhouse is an expression of permanence through simplicity—where every beam and surface tells a story of renewal.
